The Cost of One Month in the UK

Our second-to-last stop on our RTW trip was the UK. We took the train into London, where we stayed with a friend of mine from college, explored the city, and spent a solid day touring the Harry Potter Leavesden studios. Then we hired a car and drove around in a clockwise circle, hitting up several Harry Potter filming locations along the way. The highlight of this little road trip was when we dipped into Scotland, where I spent a weekend in Edinburgh writing in The Elephant Cafe (where J.K. Rowling penned the early parts of Harry Potter; can you tell I what I structured our UK leg around?). After we returned the car in London, we hopped on a plane and spent a week in Belfast, aka our Game of Thrones tour part 2 (part 1 was in Croatia). The UK was pricey, but worth every penny (pence?).

Note: Most of our purchases were on the credit card, but some were made in cash. To get an accurate approximation of how much in USD we spent, I used the exchange rate that our cards gave us on the day on or nearest to the date that our cash purchase was made.

Hello, United Kingdom!

US$4,918.84/ 35 days ≈ US$140.54/day

Transportation: US$1,910.44

Accommodation: US$1,076.09

Food: US$1,230.09

Adventure/sightseeing: US$475.46

Miscellaneous: US$226.75

Grand Total So far: US$7,820.69 (New Zealand) + US$3,547.80 (Australia) + US$6,153.16 (Japan) + US$3,261.79 (SERBIA, CROATIA, and GREECE) + US$1,696.18(BudaKraPraVienna) + US$2,230.59(Italy) + US$3,861.82 (France and Switzerland) + US$1,793.33 (Germany) + US$784.55 (Netherlands) + US$705.76 (Belgium) + US$4,918.84 (UK)= US$36,774.51

Divide that by 385 days of travel and that leaves us with an average of just over US$95.52 for both of us, or about US$47.76 per person per day. Our time in the UK definitely bumped our daily average up, but we’re still below our initial goal of US$50 per person per day, and only Ireland is left!
